From Walking to Box Jumps: Laura’s Fitness Journey
At NW Indy Athletic Club, we believe everyone has a story—and it’s our honor to be part of that transformation. This month’s member spotlight shines on Laura, whose journey is a powerful reminder that fitness is not about perfection—it’s about progress.
How It Started: Walking Toward Something More
Laura began her fitness journey three and a half years ago with a simple daily walk. As she built consistency, she moved into group fitness classes—but eventually, something felt missing.
“I wanted more coaching, more focus on strength, and help learning specific skills,” she explained.
That desire led her to check out different gyms in the area, and ultimately brought her to NW Indy Athletic Club.
From Burpees to Barbells: Real Wins, Real Confidence
Since joining our gym, Laura has made some serious progress—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. She lights up when talking about her accomplishments, and for good reason.
- 💥 Clean PRs she once thought impossible
- ✅ Box jumps and lunges she couldn’t do before
- 🔥 Better burpees and front rack positions
“It’s really cool to have a challenge you’re working toward—and then to actually achieve it after months of trying.”
Fitness goals like Laura’s don’t happen overnight. But with supportive coaching, personalized guidance, and the right community, they become reality.
More Than Fitness—It’s a Lifestyle Shift
Laura also works with our nutrition coach, and she’s seen a ripple effect far beyond the gym.
“I’ve lost inches, my energy is better, my mood is better, and I sleep better. It’s a full-life upgrade.”
But perhaps the biggest win is confidence.
“Tackling challenges and achieving goals adds to your confidence—it carries over into everyday life.”
What She Wants You to Know
If you’re thinking about trying a gym or starting a new fitness journey, Laura gets it—she’s been there.
“When I first started, I was around 300 pounds. I felt like I couldn’t do much. But I learned it’s not about what you can’t do—it’s about starting where you are.”
Her advice?
“Nobody’s watching you. Everyone’s just working through their own pain and goals. So just show up—and find a gym like R&T that will cheer you on while you try.”

Final note from Coach: Why Waiting to “Get in Shape First” Holds You Back
One of the most common misconceptions we hear is, “I need to get in shape before I join a gym.” But that’s like saying, “I’ll start saving money once I’m rich.” It doesn’t make sense—yet it’s a mindset that keeps so many people stuck. The reality is, the gym is where transformation begins, not where it ends. At NW Indy Athletic Club, we meet you where you are and help you build from there, no matter your current fitness level.
Just like Laura shared, when she started her journey, she was nearly 300 pounds and unsure of what she could even do. But she didn’t let that stop her. She focused on showing up, doing what she could, and trusting the process. Today, she’s lifting weights, doing lunges and box jumps, and feeling stronger and more confident than ever.
This kind of progress doesn’t come from waiting until you’re “ready”—it comes from taking that first step, even when it’s uncomfortable. We coach real people through real-life challenges. Whether you’re new to fitness, dealing with old injuries, or just trying to reclaim your energy and confidence, you’re not expected to have it all figured out. You’re expected to start.
So if you’ve been holding back because you feel out of shape or intimidated, know this: the only wrong way to start is not starting at all. At our gym, we’ve helped people of all ages and fitness levels build the strength, energy, and mindset they need to succeed—inside the gym and out.
